This delightful pupcake recipe from Recipe Tin Eats uses a secret ingredient to make deliciously fluffy frosting… potatoes!

Pupcake Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1/2 cup smooth/creamy peanut butter (make sure it is xylitol/birch sugar-free)
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 1/2 cups flour (any kind)
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 cup oil (vegetable, canola, peanut, or olive oil)
  • 3/4 cup water

Fluffy Dog Friendly "Frosting" Ingredients

  • 1 pound of potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 1/2 cup yogurt, plain low fat (any unsweetened type) OR sour cream
  • 2 - 4 tbsp water
  • 12 small dog bone biscuits, for decorating (optional)

Instructions

Pupcakes

  1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. Place bananas in a bowl and mash until smooth.
  3. Add peanut butter, honey, and eggs. Whisk until smooth.
  4. Add flour, baking powder, oil, and water. Whisk until smooth.
  5. Fill liners ¾ full. Bake for 22 minutes until the top is golden, or a skewer comes out clean.
  6. Transfer to cooling rack and cool for 30 minutes before frosting.

Frosting

  1. Place potatoes in a large pot of water. Bring to boil, then cook potatoes for 20 minutes until very, very soft and starting to crumble on the edges. (Just like you’re making mashed potatoes!)
  2. Drain, then return to the empty pot. Add yogurt, honey, and water (starting with 2 tbsp). Beat with an electric beater until smooth and creamy. Add more water if needed - it should have a soft consistency like frosting.
  3. Pipe or spread frosting onto cupcakes.

If you want to cheat and make this recipe even easier, you could use plain instant mashed potatoes.

5. No-Bake Dog Cakes

This no-bake recipe from Spoiled Hounds is a super sweet treat that doesn’t use eggs or grain, so it’s really incredible for dogs with allergies. This recipe makes eight servings, so you can feed your dog and all of their friends!

Ingredients

Cake Layers

  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup melted coconut oil (the kind made just for dogs)
  • 1/2 cup natural unsweetened peanut butter (make sure it is xylitol/birch sugar-free)
  • 1/4 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree

Cake Filling and Frosting

  • 1/2 cup natural unsweetened peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt

Cake Topping

  • 5 large blueberries

Instructions

  1. Place the oat flour, rolled oats, melted coconut oil, peanut butter, applesauce, and pumpkin puree in a mixing bowl.
  2. Mix and let the dough sit for 15 to 20 minutes until it stiffens up.
  3. Press or roll out the dough onto a flat surface until it is about 1 to 1½-inches thick.
  4. Cut out as many same-size circles as possible. This recipe makes three 4-inch layers with enough left over for two small treats formed into a ball.
  5. Place the circles separately, not on top of each other, on a tray or plate put into fridge until stiff.
  6. Spread peanut butter on top of 2 layers and Greek yogurt on top of 1 layer.
  7. Stack the layers to make a layer cake with the yogurt frosted layer on top.
